Tejano or Texano (Spanish for "Texan") is a term used to identify a Texan of criollo Spanish or Mexican heritage.
Historically, the Spanish term Tejano has been used to identify different groups of people. During the Spanish Colonial times and pre-Anglo colonization, the term primarily applied to Spanish settlers of the region now known as Texas (first as part of the New Spain and then in 1821 as part of Mexico).
However, during the times of the Republic of Texas, the term also applied to Spanish-speaking Texans, Hispanicized Germans, and other Europeans that settled and called Texas “Home.” Even today, "Tejano" identifies an individual from Texas regardless of race or ethnic background.
As a result, and in addition to identifying ourselves as Houston Texans fans, Del Sur (Spanish for “Of the South”), adopted the Tejano name in homage and recognition of the men and women that throughout history contributed to the formation of the Great State of Texas that we now know and live in today. Tejano culture, cuisine, and its music are unique to Texas and are a direct result of the adoption and application of Native American, Spanish, Criollo, and other European customs/traditions that have survived today and have long been a source of pride for Texans.
In modern times, Tejanos are pioneers in their own right--making a positive impact in the State, the Country, and the World by use of their talents. Taking the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors as examples and our mission defined, Los Tejanos Del Sur is more than just a football fan club!
